Field Trip

The 3rd grade is going to Mt. Timpanogos Cave next month for our field trip. I have never been to said cave, but have been excited to go! The park service ranger explained that it will take us approx. 1 1/2 hours to walk up to the cave, just under 1 hour in the cave, and 45 minutes to hike down. That's a heck of a lot of hiking! I'm not quite the outdoorsy, hiker type of gal, and I'm getting sort of worried that I'm going to DIE. Hehe. We will need water bottles to carry up the trail, and I heard to bring a jacket for inside the cave, being that it's cold. Has anyone else been to the cave? Any suggestions?

Suggestions:
*Make sure all kids go to the bathroom before you start to hike up, and at the top before you leave. And limit the fluid intake. We used to do this field trip every year, and every year a kid would pee their pants.
*Make sure everyone has their jacket. When they say it's cold in the cave, they are not kidding.
*Take the safety talk they give you seriously. A kid fell off the trail and died about five years ago. And one year there was a pretty big rockslide while we were actually there.

It is a fun field trip though. I enjoyed the hike, but some of my parent helpers barely made it. Have fun.

It's been a long time since I've been to the cave, but I remember it being alot of fun. Have a fun field trip.

I go with my husband at least once a year. Here is my advice:

1. Limit water (great idea Heather). There are some nasty bathrooms toward the top, but it's best to not have to use them. Have everyone use the bathroom's at the bottom before you start.

2. Be patient. It's really really steep and kids will definitely be complaining.

3. Be careful. It's really scary to look down because it's a long long long way down. Stay to the inside of the trail.

4. I recommend bringing a snack to eat at the top. Snickers, granola bar, whatever.

5. Bring a jacket/sweatshirt. It's seriously freezing in the cave.

6. Don't let kids wear backpacks. There are parts in the cave that you have to squeeze through.

It's way fun. I enjoy it every time. Plus, it's a great workout! You can bring a camera. You can get some really cool shots of stalactites and stalagmites.

I loved going! I went with my (older) parents and it was walk two steps, drag Mom, walk two steps, drag Mom. But as long as you aren't in a hurry, don't worry. Don't let the kids run on the trail; they will want to coming down! Make sure they wear sunscreen.
